The language chosen at application fixes both the Tier-1 Part VI language competency paper and the entire medium of the Tier-2 subject paper, and the notification states that the option of medium once filled will not be changed under any circumstances. Tier-1 Part V remains in English medium for everyone.

This schedule is common to every post under CBSE Notification 01/2025 in both NVS and KVS, so a Bodo or Malayalam candidate followed exactly the same calendar as a Mathematics or Science candidate. What differs for this stream is not the timetable but the language the Tier-2 paper is printed in. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

TGT Third Language is the one stream in this recruitment where the language you tick at the application stage decides the whole examination and the whole posting. It fixes the 30-mark language competency paper in Tier-1, it fixes the language in which the entire Tier-2 subject paper is printed, and it determines which handful of Navodaya schools can ever employ you. The notification also says the option of medium, once filled, will not be changed under any circumstances.

The Tier-2 medium exception is the whole point

For Science, Social Studies, Mathematics and the other academic TGTs, Tier-2 is bilingual: English alongside one of twelve other Indian languages chosen by the candidate. The notification removes that choice for this stream and states that for TGT Third Language the medium of the test will be in the language concerned, the same treatment given to PGT Modern Indian Language. There is no English column to fall back on for an ambiguously worded question. Preparation therefore has to be done in the language itself, including grammar terminology, literary criticism vocabulary and the conventions of formal written prose in that language, not in translation from English study material.

Write the descriptive answers in the target language

Forty of the 100 Tier-2 marks are 10 descriptive questions at four marks each, and in a language paper these are where command of register shows. A candidate who reads fluently but writes rarely in the language will lose marks on script accuracy, sandhi and inflection, and on the difference between spoken and literary form. The objective half is 60 questions at one mark with 0.25 deducted for a wrong answer. Practise by hand, in script, to a 2.5-hour clock, because the notification confirms the paper is a combination of pen-and-paper and OMR and that no re-evaluation of any component is available.

443 posts, but split 17 ways

The headline figure is 443 NVS TGT Third Language vacancies, which reads large until it is divided. Assamese has 66, Telugu 57, Gujarati 52, Kannada 49, Bengali 43, Odiya 37, Marathi 30 and Malayalam 27. Below that the numbers fall away sharply: Punjabi 18, Khasi 11, Bodo, Mizo and Urdu 10 each, Garo and Nepali 8, Tamil 5 and Manipuri 2. Category reservation is then applied inside those small pools, so for the smallest languages a single category may carry one post or none. Check the count for your own language before planning, rather than the 443 total, and remember that Tier-2 shortlists at 1:3 against notified vacancies.

The post exists only where the language is taught

This is not a subject offered in every Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. The third language is taught in the schools of the region where that language is current, which is why the vacancy table is drawn up by language rather than spread evenly across the network. A Garo or Mizo post exists in a very small set of schools; a Telugu or Assamese post in many more. The practical consequence is geographic: the pool of stations you can ever be posted to is bounded by where your language is on the timetable, and internal movement later in the career is constrained by the same fact rather than by the general all-India transfer pool.

Posted outside your own linguistic state

The notification adds a condition for this stream that does not apply to the academic TGTs: candidates shortlisted for appointment as TGT Regional Language in NVS will initially be posted outside the linguistic state only. Combined with the general NVS rule that initial posting may be anywhere in India and requests for change of station or region will not be entertained under any circumstances, this means a Kannada teacher should expect a first posting in a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya outside Karnataka. On top of that, these are fully residential rural schools where teachers must live on campus with house mastership, supervised study and migration escort duties, for which NVS pays a 10 per cent special allowance over Level-7 pay.

Common questions

Which languages are offered under NVS TGT Third Language and how many posts each?

The notification lists 443 NVS posts across 17 languages: Assamese 66, Telugu 57, Gujarati 52, Kannada 49, Bengali 43, Odiya 37, Marathi 30, Malayalam 27, Punjabi 18, Khasi 11, Bodo 10, Mizo 10, Urdu 10, Garo 8, Nepali 8, Tamil 5 and Manipuri 2. These are the NVS figures; Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan vacancies are shown separately in the same document. Category reservation is applied within each language pool, so the effective competition for a small language differs sharply from the headline total.

Is the NVS TGT Third Language Tier-2 paper bilingual in English and Hindi?

No, and this is the key exception in the notification. For other TGT posts Tier-2 is bilingual in English and one of the twelve other Indian languages chosen at application. For TGT Third Language the notification states that the medium of the test will be in the language concerned, meaning the whole paper is set in that language with no English version alongside. The same treatment is applied to PGT Modern Indian Language. The medium option, once filled at application, cannot be changed under any circumstances.

Will I be posted in my own state if selected as NVS TGT Third Language?

No. The notification states that candidates shortlisted for appointment to the post of TGT Regional Language in NVS will initially be posted outside the linguistic state only. That sits alongside the general rule that selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India on initial posting and that requests for a change of station or region will not be entertained under any circumstances. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, so the posting also carries a requirement to live on the Vidyalaya campus, for which rent-free accommodation is provided where available.

What qualification is needed for NVS TGT Third Language?

The notification requires either a four-year integrated degree from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent marks in the concerned subject and in the aggregate including the B.Ed. component, or a Bachelor or Honours degree with at least 50 per cent in the concerned language plus a B.Ed. with at least 50 per cent. A pass in CTET Paper-II conducted by CBSE is mandatory, as it is for the academic TGT subjects. The upper age limit is 35 years, with the standard category relaxations set out in the notification.

Does Tier-1 test my regional language for the NVS Third Language post?

Partly. Tier-1 is a common 100-question, 300-mark, two-hour OMR paper with one mark deducted for each wrong answer, made up of General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge at 60 marks each, English Language Competency at 30 and a language competency test in one other modern Indian language at 30. Part V is only in English medium and Part VI is only in the language opted by the candidate. There is no subject content in Tier-1 and its marks do not count towards the final merit list.

How is the final merit decided for NVS TGT Third Language?

Tier-1 only screens candidates at a 1:10 ratio within each category and contributes nothing further. The 100-mark Tier-2 paper, set entirely in the language concerned and made up of 60 objective marks with 0.25 negative marking plus 10 descriptive questions of four marks each, carries 85 per cent of the final score. The interview, including a demonstration lesson, carries 15 per cent, with shortlisting from Tier-2 at 1:3 against notified vacancies. No re-evaluation of the objective, written or descriptive parts is available.
