This calendar is shared with KVS, because CBSE runs one examination cycle for both bodies under a single notification. Everything after the result, including preference, interview and appointment, is handled against the Navodaya vacancy table separately. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.
What this means for your preparation
Candidates routinely apply to NVS and KVS as if they were two doors into the same job, because one notification and one examination cover both. They are not. The examination is joint; the service is not. A Navodaya PGT lives on a rural residential campus with a boarding-school duty roster, and that is a decision to make before the preference form, not after the result.
Joint examination, separate employer
CBSE conducted Recruitment Notification 01/2025 on behalf of both Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, advertising 14,967 posts in total. One application portal, one Tier-I screening paper on 10 and 11 January 2026, one Tier-II subject paper on 28 March 2026, one set of press notes. But the 1,513 PGT posts on the Navodaya side are a distinct vacancy table with their own category splits, and appointment is to Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education that runs Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. Nothing about the shared paper makes the two services interchangeable, and the preference exercised after the Tier-II result is where the two part company.
Residence on campus is a condition, not a perk
The notification is explicit: JNVs are co-educational, fully residential schools up to senior secondary level, and teachers are required to stay in the Vidyalaya campus, for which rent-free accommodation as available is provided. Selected candidates draw a 10 per cent special allowance for performing residential duties. In practice that means house-master style responsibilities outside teaching hours, presence during vacations by roster, and a working life bounded by the campus. The allowance is compensation for that duty, not a housing benefit. A candidate with school-age children of their own, a working spouse tied to a city, or caring responsibilities elsewhere should weigh this against the Level-8 pay before ranking NVS ahead of KVS.
Where the 1,513 posts actually are
The subject distribution is heavily weighted to the sciences and mathematics: Physics 186, Mathematics 167 and Biology 161 together account for more than a third of the PGT vacancies. Economics at 148 and English at 146 follow, then Computer Science 135, Hindi 127, Chemistry 121, History 110 and Geography 106. Physical Education has 63 and Commerce just 43. Reserved-category totals across all subjects are 403 OBC non-creamy-layer, 222 SC, 146 EWS and 108 ST, against 634 unreserved, with 16 posts for locomotor disability, 15 for visual impairment, 16 for hearing impairment and 16 in other categories. Commerce candidates in particular should note how thin their cadre is before assuming a national recruitment means volume.
Level-8, age 40, and what the paper decides
NVS PGT sits at Level-8 of the pay matrix, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100, with an upper age limit of 40 years and the usual relaxations, against Level-7 for the KVS TGT cadre. Essential qualifications run to a master's degree or integrated postgraduate course with at least 50 per cent marks in the subject concerned, a B.Ed. meeting the notified conditions, and the ability to teach through both Hindi and English media. The examination fee was Rs 1,500 plus Rs 500 processing, with SC, ST and PwBD candidates exempt from the examination fee only. The final merit list gives 85 per cent to the Tier-II subject paper and 15 per cent to the interview.
What Navodaya does besides employ teachers
Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti also runs the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test, the entrance examination through which children are admitted to JNVs, with separate lateral-entry selection tests for Classes IX and XI. A PGT joining Navodaya joins a system whose intake is selected by competitive test and whose students board on site from Class VI. That is the practical difference from a Kendriya Vidyalaya, where the intake is largely the children of transferable central government employees and the school is a day school. The teaching year, the pastoral load and the examination culture of a JNV all follow from that.
