Marking starts at the full 90 and deducts for errors weighted by how much they damage the communication. NAATI's candidate instructions warn that interpreting in indirect or third-person speech attracts deductions, and that a dialogue delivered entirely in indirect speech may invalidate the test. One segment per dialogue may be repeated without penalty; further repeats are deducted.

What this means for your preparation
The mistake that costs most CCL candidates their five points is treating the test as a language exam rather than a marked interpreting performance. Fluency in Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati or Bengali is the entry condition, not the skill being assessed. Marking starts at 90 and falls, and it falls for delivery habits that a fluent bilingual speaker would never notice in ordinary conversation.
The per-dialogue minimum is the real hurdle
Two numbers must both be satisfied: 63 or more out of 90 overall, and at least 29 out of 45 in each dialogue. That second condition removes the usual exam strategy of banking marks where you are strong. A candidate who scores 40 in a familiar medical dialogue and 25 in an unfamiliar insurance or tenancy dialogue reaches 65 overall and still fails. Because the two dialogues are drawn from different everyday domains, preparation that concentrates on one comfortable subject area is structurally risky. Work the domains you find alien, not the ones you enjoy, and treat 29 per dialogue as the target rather than the aggregate.
Deductions punish delivery, not only vocabulary
Marking is by deduction from a full 90, weighted by how much each error damages communication. The candidate instructions single out long pauses and repeated self-corrections as distractions from the flow of the conversation, and treat indirect or third-person rendering as a deduction in its own right, with an entire dialogue in indirect speech capable of invalidating the test. That means saying he says that he has a headache instead of interpreting in first person is penalised even when the content is perfect. Practise speaking as the parties speak, in first person, and let a small imperfect rendering stand rather than restarting a sentence twice.
You get one free repeat per dialogue
NAATI allows one segment per dialogue to be repeated without penalty; repeats beyond that are deducted. Since segments run to 35 words or less and you must begin interpreting within five seconds of the chime, that single repeat is the only safety net for the one segment that carries dense numbers, an address, a date or a legal term. Spend it deliberately. Candidates commonly waste it early on a segment they could have handled, then meet the numerically heavy segment with no cushion. A practical drill is to take note-taking seriously for figures and names so the repeat is never needed for routine content.
Online delivery is a technical exam too
All CCL tests are now conducted online. The setup requires a laptop running Google Chrome and a second device, a phone or tablet, positioned as a side camera, and takes about ten to fifteen minutes before testing begins. Audio quality determines whether an examiner can hear a correct rendering at all, so a wired headset, a quiet room and a tested upload path matter as much as vocabulary. NAATI's free practice test does not use the proctoring service and includes only one dialogue, so it will not surface proctoring or camera problems. Run the full technical check well before test day.
Sequencing against the points test
Schedule 6D of the migration regulations awards five points for a credentialled community language qualification, and requires the NAATI credential to be held at the time of invitation, not at the time of lodgement. Results take four to six weeks, bookings close a week before the test, and NAATI will not accept a new application until an existing result has been issued. A failed attempt therefore costs at least two months and another AUD 814 before a second result exists. Book early enough that one repeat still lands before the invitation round you are aiming at.
Common questions
How many points does the NAATI CCL test give for Australian PR?
Five. The Department of Home Affairs points test, Schedule 6D, awards five points for a credentialled community language qualification, and the released departmental document states the applicant must show that at the time of invitation to apply for the visa they held the specified NAATI standard. A community language credential, which is what CCL produces, is one of the accepted qualifications. The five points are the only reason most migration candidates sit CCL; NAATI itself says the test is not a professional certification and does not qualify you to work as an interpreter.
What is the CCL pass mark out of 90?
You need 63 or more out of 90, and separately at least 29 out of the 45 marks available in each of the two dialogues. Both conditions must be met. Marking uses a deduction method that begins at the full 90 and subtracts for errors according to how badly they affect the communication, rather than awarding marks for correct items. This is why a candidate can be comfortably over 63 in total and still fail on the second dialogue's individual minimum.
Is Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati or Bengali available for CCL?
NAATI's CCL page lists 55 languages, and names Hindi among the examples given on that page. The authority also announced in March 2024 that Dzongkha had been added in response to community requests, so the list is periodically extended. Test frequency differs by language: NAATI states that high-demand languages are tested every month while low-demand languages are tested at least four times a year. How much does the CCL test cost in 2026?
AUD 814 including GST under NAATI's fee schedule for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Two related fees sit alongside it: an examiner-marked practice CCL test at AUD 165, and a review of a CCL test result at AUD 187 per application. NAATI notes that all prices are subject to change without notice. Cancelling at least one hour before the scheduled start returns 75 per cent of the test fee; non-attendance or a late cancellation returns nothing.
Can I retake the CCL test if I fail, and how soon?
Yes. NAATI's published material does not set a fixed cooling-off period between attempts, but its terms state that a candidate cannot apply for a new test until their existing result has been issued, and results take four to six weeks. Bookings also close a week before the test date. In practice the earliest realistic second sitting is about two months after the first, at the full fee again. If your score was 58 or higher, a paid review may be the faster route before rebooking.
How long is a NAATI CCL credential valid?
Credentials issued on or after 9 August 2022 are valid for five years from the date of issue. Credentials issued before that date carry a three-year validity. Because Schedule 6D requires the credential to be held at the time of invitation, the expiry date matters for anyone sitting in an expression-of-interest pool for a long period. Check the issue date on your credential rather than assuming five years, and allow for the four to six week result turnaround if you need to re-sit before an invitation round.
