Tier-1 is two hours for 100 questions and 300 marks with one mark deducted per wrong answer; Tier-2 is two and a half hours for 70 questions and 100 marks with 0.25 deducted only on the objective half. A Hindi applicant who names Hindi as the Modern Indian Language meets their own subject in Part VI, but at 30 marks and at a competency rather than post-graduate level. Tier-1 marks are used only to shortlist: the notification builds merit from Tier-2 and interview at 85 and 15 per cent. The post sits at Level-8 of the pay matrix, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100.

This schedule is shared by every subject and every post in Recruitment Notification 01/2025: a single notification, a single application window and a single Tier-1 and Tier-2 sitting served PGT, TGT, PRT and the non-teaching cadres together. Only the result line is specific to Hindi, because CBSE declared Tier-2 outcomes in twelve phases between 17 August and 14 September 2026 and Hindi came in the eleventh. Tier-1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026 as reported by Career Power; the remaining dates are from CBSE and KVS notices. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

Hindi candidates tend to read the paper as a literature paper and prepare काव्य and गद्य chronologically from आदिकाल onward. The syllabus is wider than that. Literature is one of four blocks; the other three are grammar and usage, प्रयोजनमूलक हिंदी, meaning functional and official Hindi, and सृजनात्मक लेखन, original creative writing. The last two are where the descriptive marks concentrate and where a purely literary preparation quietly leaks marks.

The साहित्यिक अभिरुचि section runs from आदिकाल to रीतिकाल with Chandvardai, Amir Khusro and Vidyapati, then the निर्गुण भक्ति धारा in its ज्ञानाश्रयी and प्रेमाश्रयी branches with Kabir, Dadu, Raidas, Nanak, Jayasi and Kutban, and the सगुण भक्ति धारा in its राम and कृष्ण branches with Tulsidas, Keshav, Surdas, Meerabai and Raskhan. The आधुनिक काल is covered through the भारतेन्दु युग, the द्विवेदी युग, छायावाद with Prasad, Mahadevi, Pant and Nirala, and the छायावादोत्तर poets including Bachchan, Dinkar and Muktibodh. A separate head covers गद्य साहित्य and its full range of forms, from निबंध, उपन्यास, कहानी and नाटक to रेखाचित्र, संस्मरण, यात्रावृत्तांत, आत्मकथा, डायरी, आलोचना and रिपोर्ताज.

Two heads that candidates habitually postpone are साहित्य शास्त्र and the development of the Hindi language. The first covers काव्य रूप, काव्य गुण and दोष, अलंकार in their शब्द, अर्थ and उभय categories including contemporary figures, बिंब, छंद, प्रतीक, भाषा and शैली, and Western poetics alongside the Indian tradition. The second covers Hindi's dialects and sub-dialects with their distinguishing features, and language families. Both are dense, finite and highly testable in a one-mark objective format, which makes them unusually efficient revision. A candidate who can place a दोहा's छंद, name an अलंकार on sight and locate Braj, Awadhi, Bundeli and Bhojpuri on the dialect map is collecting marks others leave.

The syllabus names a full applied-Hindi block: journalism in the shape of समाचार, संपादकीय, रिपोर्ट, फीचर and साक्षात्कार; writing for radio and television; advertising copy; and कार्यालयी हिंदी, meaning memoranda, reports and government correspondence. Alongside it sits सृजनात्मक लेखन, which asks for original poetry, short fiction, creative essays, adaptation of a story into a poem, experiential narrative, dialogue writing and composition on contemporary topics. Together these are the natural home of the ten descriptive questions worth 40 of the paper's 100 marks. Drafting a सरकारी पत्र or a 250-word फीचर to time is a different skill from summarising Premchand, and it has to be practised separately.

A Hindi post-graduate reasonably expects the screening test to favour them. It barely does. Tier-1 carries 300 marks, of which Language Competency in a Modern Indian Language is ten questions and 30 marks; an applicant who names Hindi there meets their own language, but pitched as general competency rather than at the post-graduate level the notification specifies for Tier-2. Language Competency in English contributes another 30. The remaining 240 marks are General Reasoning, Numeric Ability, Basic Computer Literacy and General Knowledge, each 20 questions and 60 marks, with one mark deducted per wrong answer. Numeric Ability and Computer Literacy are where literature graduates are screened out, and they warrant real preparation time.

PGT Hindi was declared on 5 September 2026, after every other mainstream PGT subject: History and Economics on 20 August, Geography, Biology and Commerce on 28 August, English on 3 September. The lag carries no implication about standards; CBSE simply released twelve phases in sequence. What it does mean is that Hindi candidates entered the post-result stage last and have the shortest run-in before interviews. CBSE has not published a PGT Hindi cut-off, and for interview posts the result shows shortlisting status rather than marks, with marksheets due within fifteen days of the final result. Expected cut-off tables quoting PGT figures out of 150 marks do not match the notified 100-mark Tier-2 and should be disregarded.
