How the three III qualifications stack

LevelCredit points requiredCompulsory papersTime limit
Licentiate60IC-01 Principles of Insurance (20 CP), plus IC-02 Practice of Life Insurance or IC-11 Practice of General Insurance (20 CP), plus one optional subject of 20, 30 or 40 CPCredits valid five years
Associateship250, including the 60 from LicentiateIC-22 Life Insurance Underwriting or IC-45 General Insurance Underwriting (30 CP), plus IC-26 Life Assurance Finance or IC-46 General Insurance Accounts (30 CP), plus optional subjects to reach 250Credits valid five years
Fellowship490, including the 250 from AssociateshipOne actuarial subject of 40 CP chosen from eight, plus optional subjects to reach 490Seven years maximum to complete

The three levels are cumulative, not parallel. Licentiate credits count towards the 250 needed for Associateship, and Associateship credits count towards the 490 needed for Fellowship, so the incremental work is 190 credit points and then 240. Candidates choose a Life, Non-Life or combined stream at Associateship level.

The December 2026 rows are marked tentative because the only source seen for them is ModelExam, a private preparation site, rather than a III page. III's own online examination page points to a yearly schedule document, which candidates should download and treat as authoritative over anything here.

What this means for your preparation

Candidates routinely treat these as three separate exams to be sat in turn. They are not. III counts credit points, not passes, and the credits are cumulative: 60 for Licentiate, 250 for Associateship inclusive of that 60, and 490 for Fellowship inclusive of the 250. Missing that arithmetic is what leads people to underestimate the Associateship, which is by far the largest single jump.

The real workload sits in the Associateship

Licentiate takes 60 credit points, typically three papers: IC-01 Principles of Insurance at 20, one of IC-02 Practice of Life Insurance or IC-11 Practice of General Insurance at 20, and an optional of 20, 30 or 40. Associateship then requires 250 in total, so 190 more, and Fellowship 490, so a further 240. Measured in incremental effort the Associateship is more than three times the Licentiate. With a ceiling of six papers per session and four sessions a year, and with most subjects carrying 20 or 30 credit points, a realistic Associateship plan runs across several sessions rather than one push.

Watch the credit validity clocks

III's handbook sets a five-year validity on credits at Licentiate and Associateship level and a maximum of seven years to complete Fellowship. Because credits are cumulative, a lapse does not merely delay a level, it can erase points already earned towards the next one. The practical discipline is to decide at the outset whether you are stopping at Licentiate or going on. A candidate who takes the Licentiate, pauses for four years, then decides to pursue Associateship may find early credits close to expiry just as the heaviest paper load begins.

Pick your stream before the compulsory papers

The Life and Non-Life split is made through the compulsory choices, not by declaring a stream. At Licentiate it is IC-02 against IC-11. At Associateship it is IC-22 Life Insurance Underwriting against IC-45 General Insurance Underwriting, and IC-26 Life Assurance Finance against IC-46 General Insurance Accounts, each worth 30 credit points. III allows candidates to take Life, Non-Life or both combined. Someone working in general insurance who drifts into the Life compulsories because they appear first in the subject list ends up with 60 credit points of compulsory material that is irrelevant to their job.

Fees are per paper, and they went up in April

Because enrolment is priced by paper, total cost scales with credit points rather than with levels. On the schedule in force since 1 April 2026 the rates for India and SAARC are Rs 600 for a 20 credit point subject, Rs 900 for 30 and Rs 1,100 for 40, plus applicable taxes, against Rs 3,000, Rs 3,900 and Rs 4,800 for overseas candidates. Registration is Rs 800 in India and SAARC and Rs 3,500 overseas, and a one-time Rs 1,100 registration with compulsory subjects applies at both Associateship and Fellowship, Rs 4,500 overseas. Reaching 490 credit points is a sustained outlay, not a single fee.

Format rewards coverage over depth

All papers are objective multiple-choice, two hours long, with a pass mark of 60 per cent and above. That is a demanding threshold for a multiple-choice paper and it rewards even coverage of the syllabus rather than mastery of favoured topics, since there is no choice of questions to exploit and no partial credit from a written answer. With up to six papers permitted in one session, the temptation is to bulk-book; the pass mark argues against it. New and revised study course materials apply from the September 2026 examination, so confirm you are working from the current edition before the December session.

Common questions

When is the next III exam session and when does registration open?

The December 2026 session is next. ModelExam, a private preparation site, publishes registration as 5 to 15 October 2026, slot booking as 5 to 11 November 2026, examinations on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December 2026 and results on or before 31 December 2026. These dates are not confirmed from a III page here: III's online examination page refers candidates to a downloadable yearly schedule document for 2026, which should be treated as authoritative.

Who is eligible to register for the III Licentiate?

III's examination handbook requires a candidate to have passed Matriculation, S.S.L.C., S.S.C. or an equivalent examination, or alternatively to have worked in insurance for three years or more. There is no degree requirement and no employer sponsorship requirement. Registration is done online through the III website, or on paper through a local Associated Institute, and the registration fee for Licentiate includes life membership of the Institute.

How many credit points do I need for Associateship and Fellowship?

Associateship requires 250 credit points in total, which includes the 60 already earned at Licentiate, so 190 further points. Fellowship requires 490 in total, which includes the 250 from Associateship, so a further 240. Individual subjects carry 20, 30 or 40 credit points. Associateship has two compulsory 30 point papers, an underwriting paper and a finance or accounts paper, in either the Life or the Non-Life stream; Fellowship has one compulsory 40 point actuarial subject chosen from eight.

What is the pass mark and exam format for III papers?

All professional examination papers are objective multiple-choice, run for two hours, and require 60 per cent and above to pass, according to III's examination handbook. Sessions are held four times a year, in March, June, September and December, and a candidate may attempt a maximum of six papers in any one session. Slot booking takes place in the month before the examination, so a candidate chooses their date and centre within the session window rather than being allotted one.

How much do the III exams cost now?

On the fee schedule effective 1 April 2026, candidates in India and the SAARC region pay Rs 800 registration, then Rs 600 per 20 credit point subject, Rs 900 per 30 credit point subject and Rs 1,100 per 40 credit point subject, with applicable taxes added. Overseas candidates pay Rs 3,500 registration and Rs 3,000, Rs 3,900 and Rs 4,800 respectively. A one-time fee of Rs 1,100 in India and SAARC, or Rs 4,500 overseas, covers registration with compulsory subjects at Associateship and at Fellowship.

Do my Licentiate credits expire if I pause before Associateship?

Yes. III's handbook places a five-year validity on credits at the Licentiate and Associateship stages, and allows a maximum of seven years to complete Fellowship. Since the 60 Licentiate credit points count towards the 250 needed for Associateship, letting them lapse means re-earning them rather than simply starting the next level late. Candidates intending to progress should plan the Associateship papers to begin well inside the five-year period rather than treating Licentiate as a standalone certificate.
