Tier-I is qualifying only and runs 2 hours 30 minutes with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer; the merit list for PGT is prepared on Tier-II performance alone. Shortlisting into Tier-II is at 1:10 against the notified vacancies, so roughly 1,200 Commerce candidates competed for 120 posts. Note that Tier-I contains no Commerce at all: Part-V Domain Knowledge is defined by the Information Bulletin and the NESTS syllabus as case-based activity pedagogy and NEP-2020, so Accountancy and Business Studies are examined only in Tier-II.

This calendar is common to every subject in the ESSE-2025 recruitment: one notification, one application window, one Tier-I sitting and one Tier-II window for all PGT subjects and for the TGT, Principal and non-teaching posts. The only Commerce-specific entry is the Tier-II result of 10 September 2026, because NESTS is finalising results post by post and declaring them in phases.

The mistake that costs Commerce candidates most is reading the post-graduate degree requirement as a description of the paper. NESTS requires an M.Com., but the syllabus it published on 19 September 2025 is the senior secondary Accountancy and Business Studies course, from Introduction to Accounting through to Consumer Protection. Corporate finance theory at master's level is not on it. The second mistake is not checking the graduation-level subject condition before applying.

The published Commerce syllabus is explicitly in two halves. The Accountancy half runs Introduction to Accounting, Theory Base of Accounting, Recording of Business Transactions, Depreciation, Provisions and Reserves, Trial Balance and Rectification of Errors, Financial Accounting, Partnership Firms Accounting, reconstitution and dissolution, retirement and death of a partner, Share Capital, Debentures, Financial Statements of a Company and Cash Flow Statement. The Business Studies half runs from Foundation of Business and forms of business organisation through public, private and global enterprises, business services, emerging modes of business, social responsibility and ethics, sources of finance, internal and international trade, the management functions of planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling, financial management, financial markets, marketing and consumer protection. Candidates trained as accountants routinely neglect the second half, which carries at least as many named heads as the first.

For Commerce alone the bulletin adds a qualifier to the master's degree: it requires a master's in Commerce provided the candidate has studied Accountancy and Business Studies at graduation level. That is checked against transcripts at document verification, not at the online application stage, so an application can pass, a Tier-I and Tier-II can be cleared, and the candidacy can still fail on a B.Com. transcript that carried Accountancy but not Business Studies, or that substituted Economics or Management papers. Anyone shortlisted from the 10 September notice should pull the graduation mark sheets now and check the paper names, and obtain a university clarification letter where a paper is titled differently from the bulletin's wording. The general requirements still apply alongside: minimum 50 per cent in the master's and a B.Ed. with 50 per cent from an NCTE-recognised institution.

Commerce is advertised at 120 posts, 49 of them unreserved, which places it mid-table among the eleven PGT subjects, below History at 140 and above Geography at 98. The Tier-I cut-offs reported by Adda247 and CareerPower are 62.333 unreserved, 57 EWS, 55.667 OBC and 51.333 SC, all broadly in line with the other PGT subjects. The ST figure of 37.333 is the outlier in the whole reported set. The plain reading is that the ST applicant pool for Commerce was too thin to fill the 1:10 shortlisting band against nine ST posts, so the cut-off fell to whatever the pool produced. An ST candidate weighing a future Commerce attempt should read that as a structurally favourable subject rather than as a one-off.

Tier-II is 100 marks in three hours, 40 from objective questions and 15 descriptive questions worth 60 marks between them, and only Tier-II counts towards merit. In Commerce the descriptive section is where the format bites, because the Accountancy heads are computational: partnership reconstitution, retirement and death of a partner, dissolution, share capital and debenture issues, financial statements and the cash flow statement all produce worked answers with a prescribed format. Marks are lost on presentation as much as on method, through missing working notes, an unbalanced balance sheet carried forward from one error, or a cash flow statement that omits the classification into operating, investing and financing. Practising full-length numericals against a clock is worth more here than another objective mock.

The bulletin is unambiguous about the posting: selected candidates can be posted in any EMRS across the country with all-India transfer liability, receive rent-free accommodation as available on campus, and must perform residential duties beyond normal teaching responsibilities. Pay is Level 8, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100, with a 10 per cent special allowance for those residential duties, and probation runs two years and can be extended. There is no state-wise vacancy table in the bulletin, so a Commerce candidate cannot target a home state through the application: the 120 posts are advertised as a national pool. That is the structural difference from a state commerce-teacher recruitment and it is worth settling before document verification rather than after.
