Alerts and Updates for CAPF Departmental Promotion Examination (ASI / Sub-Inspector)

There is no single national departmental promotion examination for ASI or Sub-Inspector across the CAPFs. Each force promotes under its own recruitment rules notified for that post and cadre, so a CRPF rule change has no automatic effect in BSF, CISF, ITBP or SSB. Where a CAPF departmental examination is notified nationally it is at Assistant Commandant level and is run by UPSC, not at ASI or SI level.

Departmental promotion dates for ASI and Sub-Inspector are not issued on a common national calendar; each force publishes them internally and, where relevant, on its own website. The dates above are the ones that were publicly documented at the time of writing.

The commonest mistake is to look for a single CAPF departmental promotion examination in the way one looks for SSC CPO. There is none. Promotion to ASI and Sub-Inspector is a force-level process, governed by the recruitment rules notified for that specific post and cadre in that specific force, and announced through unit channels rather than a national advertisement. A second mistake follows from the first: treating rules found for one force as authority for another.

The operative document is the recruitment rules notified for the exact post and cadre you are seeking, in your own force. CRPF's Recruitment Rules page shows how granular this gets: Sub-Inspector (General Duty) rules of 2 July 2025 sit alongside distinct ASI rules for General Duty, Motor Transport, Armourer, Tailor and Carpenter cadres, each notified on a different date. A tradesman ASI rule tells you nothing about the General Duty channel. Ask your unit for the current notified rule and its amendments, and note that CRPF amended the Sub-Inspector (General Duty) rules on 30 October 2025, which means any guidance printed before that date may already be superseded.

Where CRPF publishes the criteria, the binding constraints are length of service and a clean record rather than an examination score alone. Head Constable to Sub-Inspector (General Duty) requires at least five years in the rank subject to eighteen years total service, a qualified Weapon and Tactics course unless the Senior Cadre Course has been completed, and no adverse ACR entry or major punishment in the preceding five years. On the signals side, an ASI (RO or CRY) needs four years as ASI or ten years combined as Head Constable and ASI. Work backwards from those thresholds: a pending disciplinary matter or a missing mandatory course removes you from the field regardless of how well you would have written a paper.

Where a CAPF departmental competitive examination is formally notified and conducted by an external body, it is at Assistant Commandant level. CISF's Assistant Commandant (Executive) LDCE 2026 was written under UPSC on 8 March 2026 and the PST, PET and MST qualified list followed on 13 April 2026, with final selection expressly subject to Delhi High Court Writ Petition (Civil) 5877/2022. CRPF's Results page similarly carries Assistant Commandant (General Duty) LDCE results. If you are aiming at a written competitive departmental examination with a published national timetable, that is the ladder it sits on, and it is worth planning service years around rather than expecting an equivalent at Sub-Inspector level.

Departmental promotion and direct recruitment share the same Sub-Inspector cadre, so the size of the open advertisement matters to anyone waiting on the promotion quota. SSC's 2026 notice covers Sub-Inspector (GD) in CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF and SSB together with Delhi Police and CISF Fire, about 1,320 posts in all, with applications from 10 to 30 September 2026 and the computer-based examination date still to be notified. Serving personnel who meet the twenty to twenty-five age band and hold a bachelor's degree can and often do apply through this route in parallel; the notice does not state a percentage split between direct and departmental filling.

Each force publishes on its own estate: CRPF on its Recruitment Rules and Results pages, BSF through its announcements page and recruitment portal at rectt.bsf.gov.in, CISF matters of this kind through PIB and headquarters.
