What the tricolour stands for
The Indian national flag has three horizontal bands: saffron at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. The Ashoka Chakra, a navy-blue wheel with 24 spokes, sits at the centre. The flag is a shared national symbol and should always be displayed with respect.
Independence Day and Republic Day are different
India became independent from British rule on 15 August 1947. It became a republic on 26 January 1950, when the Constitution came into effect. Both days are central to India’s national calendar, but they mark different milestones.
